Comecei a ter consciência da sua existência quando tinha dez anos, o disco em vinil de Thriller acabou por ir parar a minha casa, e continua comigo. Esta é uma homenagem ao Michael que me habituei a ver na MTV, e que, a certa altura, fez parte da minha vida.

Lovelock eventually began to refer to the planet itself as some kind of superorganism. "The entire range of living matter... from whales to viruses and from oaks to algae could be regarded as constituting a single living entity capable of maintaining the Earth's atmosphere to suit its overall needs and endowed with faculties and powers far beyond those of its constituent parts," he wrote in his 1979 book Gaia: A new look at life on Earth. In other words, the Earth is not simply a planet that harbours life, it is itself alive.

É estranha a diferença entre os primeiros segundos do filme e a intriga alienígena, em pleno contexto sul africano, em jeito de documentário sobre o apartheid. O filme é produzido por Peter Jackson - o que pode ser um bom sinal.
Este filme vai passar em algumas salas de cinema em Portugal, bem como na televisão estatal portuguesa (RTP), no dia 5 de Junho, sexta-feira. Vale a pena vê-lo, pela mensagem que tenta passar, ou então pelo belíssimo trabalho fotográfico de Yann Arthus-Bertrand, produção de Luc Besson. Fiquem atentos:
PIA12002: Spirit Slipping in Soft Ground, Sol 1889.
"NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit slipped in soft ground during short backward drives on the 1,886th and 1,889th Martian days, or sols, of the rover's mission on Mars (April 23 and 26, 2009). Spirit used its front hazard-avoidance camera after driving on Sol 1889 to get this wide-angle view, which shows the soil disturbed by the drives.
Spirit drove 1.11 meters (3.6 feet) on Sol 1889 and 1.68 meters (5.5 feet) on Sol 1886. The rover drags its right front wheel, which no longer rotates. For scale, the distance between the wheel tracks is about 1 meter (40 inches).
